Chemical Peels

Chemical peeling is a technique used to improve the appearance of the skin, correct the appearance of facial blemishes and to reduce the effects of smoking and sun exposure. Peels can also be used for reducing uneven pigmentation, acne and acne scarring. Chemical peels induce exfoliation of the skin through the application of various chemical agents.

Treatment

Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) superficial peel: Which are naturally found in food products such as citrus fruit, sugar cane and sour milk. They are most commonly used, they remove the layer of cells, lightly exfoliating the skin to give a healthy glow. AHA peels may be used to treat fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, and areas of dryness, uneven pigmentation and acne.

Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) medium peel: A medium depth peel, targeting surface wrinkles and blemishes. This penetrates furher into the skin to reduce small wrinkles and acne scars, to even out skin colour and tone. After cleansing the skin to remove oils the peeling agent is carefully applied, after minutes there is a very warm sensation similar to sunburn. This lasts for a few minutes and is relieved with the application of creams.

Results

Results are dependant on individuals, maximum improvement of damaged skin is 50%-85% and although 100% is not possible, most clients view the results as dramatic. You may be required to follow a skin care programme before and after treatments to prepare the skin, and aid recovery. As superficial peels only affect the top layer of the skin you may need to have regular treatments to maintain the effect. Medium peels may need to be repeated every 6-12 months to maintain the effect. Usually a series of 2-6 peels are needed to treat skin and acne scars.
